LOGLINE
A speed-obsessed boy removes his winding key and discovers that slowing down reveals friendship, freedom, ordinary beauty, and a life beyond constant competition.
SYNOPSIS
In Wind-Up Town, children carry winding keys that make them faster at everything. One boy keeps his key wound as tightly as possible, determined to read, calculate, play, and win faster than everyone else. Then a younger child without a key asks why he is always rushing and whom he is trying to beat. For the first time, the boy stops. When he finally removes his key, ordinary experiences—drawing slowly, daydreaming, reading, hearing birds, walking beside a stream—feel completely new. A playful philosophical picture book about childhood pressure, mindfulness, self-worth, competition, and reclaiming joy at your own pace.

AUTHOR BIOGRAPHY
You Myung-geum is a Korean picture-book author and illustrator who finds inspiration in the wonder, wisdom, and quiet resilience of the natural world. She has written and illustrated books including The Wind-Up Kid, Little Spider Dangdang, Let’s Play, Rain!, Finding a Real Mom, Together, and Where Is the Butterfly? Her stories often encourage children to notice what is easily overlooked and to question pressures that adults take for granted. In The Wind-Up Kid, she turns the familiar demand to move faster and achieve more into a playful visual metaphor, inviting young readers to rediscover the value of slowing down and living at their own pace.
