LOGLINE
After eighty-four empty days, Santiago battles a giant marlin and relentless sharks, preserving dignity, hope, and courage even when victory is stripped away.
SYNOPSIS
This illustrated retelling brings Hemingway’s classic story to young readers while preserving its essential emotional arc. After eighty-four days without catching a fish, Santiago sails farther into the sea and hooks an enormous marlin. His three-day struggle tests his strength, patience, and resolve, only for sharks to consume the fish during his journey home. He returns exhausted with little more than the great skeleton, yet his dignity and hope remain intact. Richly painted and restrained, this adaptation explores perseverance, solitude, respect, defeat, and the courage to begin again.

AUTHOR BIOGRAPHY
Ernest Hemingway was an American novelist and journalist whose spare prose and themes of endurance, courage, and dignity reshaped twentieth-century fiction. He received the Pulitzer Prize for The Old Man and the Sea and the Nobel Prize in Literature. Lee Ji-sook is a Korean picture-book creator who adapts literary texts through expressive visual storytelling. She has written and illustrated picture books including The Old Man and the Sea and later created The Wind and the Moon. In this adaptation, Lee condenses Hemingway’s famous tale into a visually accessible form for younger readers while preserving the original story’s emotional focus on perseverance, solitude, defeat, and human dignity.
