Lee Sae-mi is a Korean picture-book author and illustrator whose work frequently explores environmental loss and humanity’s relationship with disappearing species and landscapes. She received the Grand Prize in the publication art category of the 2016 Korea Andersen Awards for Dodo Tree. Her written-and-illustrated books include Half Island and Please Protect Glacier Island, and she has illustrated books including Good Night, Goodbye, When I Was a Baby, and A Good Day. In The Last Dodo, Lee returns to the extinct bird that inspired her earlier award-winning work, combining ecological history, imaginative storytelling, and emotionally resonant images to encourage young readers to think about extinction and conservation.
