Bang Geul is a Korean writer who studied creative writing and screenwriting. One Day was her first picture book, begun as a story she wanted to read together with her daughter. Jeong Rim is a Korean illustrator whose children’s-book work combines expressive drawing with a strong sense of atmosphere and emotional restraint. In One Day, the collaborators use sparse language and mostly monochrome imagery to confront the disappearance of wild animals through hunting and human consumption. Their combination of restrained narration and stark visual contrast gives the environmental message unusual emotional force without turning the story into a didactic lesson.
