In colonial Rangoon, a street fighter builds a criminal empire by mastering violence, politics, and betrayal—only to discover that surviving the collapse of one empire may require destroying his own.

SYNOPSIS

Set in colonial Rangoon from the late 1920s through the Second World War, street fighter Lanmadaw Phoe Toke claws his way from the city’s roughest neighborhoods to become its most feared underworld boss. His rise unfolds amid gang warfare, corrupt police, labor unrest, nationalist politics, British colonial rule, and Japanese occupation. Alliances with Burmese, Indian, Chinese, British, and Japanese power brokers buy him influence at an escalating moral cost. As war remakes Rangoon and loyalties collapse, the criminal empire he built through cunning and violence begins turning against him. Blending noir brutality with historical sweep, the novel traces the rise and destruction of a morally complex antihero against the collapse of empire itself.
