LOGLINE
Six Jeju folktales bring wind goddesses, haenyeo, serpents, sea palaces, and mountains alive, revealing an island shaped by courage, reciprocity, community, and memory.
SYNOPSIS
Six retold folktales open a vivid doorway into Jeju Island's mythic imagination, where mountains, wind, sea, goddesses, serpents, haenyeo divers, dragon palaces, and village rituals become part of everyday life. The stories include a white serpent protecting islanders, the wind goddess Yeongdeung-halmang, a young haenyeo confronting a disease spirit, a journey into the Dragon Palace, a miraculous winter lotus, and a playful origin story surrounding Sanbangsan. Richly illustrated and rooted in Jeju's oral traditions and landscapes, the collection celebrates women-centered folklore, community, generosity, ecological imagination, courage, and the island's distinctive cultural identity.

AUTHOR BIOGRAPHY
Beautiful Jeju Stories grew from a collaborative storytelling project led through Jeju University’s continuing-education program. Writers Kim Ha-nui, Shin Im-sun, Yang Won-seok, Kim Jin-sook, Lee So-young, and Kim Hee-seok reinterpret stories rooted in Jeju’s mythology, women-centered folklore, haenyeo culture, landscapes, and community traditions. Illustrator Kim Yoon-i brings the collection together visually with detailed, lively images designed to enrich rather than overwhelm the storytelling. The result is a collective work that introduces young readers to Jeju not simply as a scenic island but as a mythic cultural landscape where goddesses, sea people, serpents, mountains, and village memory remain deeply interconnected.
